YouTube Tries Out Cheaper Premium Plan for Two

YouTube is trying something new—and potentially wallet-friendly. Starting this week,
the platform is testing a new two-person Premium subscription tier in India, France, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. A YouTube spokesperson confirmed the pilot on Monday, saying the goal is to offer subscribers more "flexibility and value."

Basically, it's YouTube's answer to Spotify Duo: two people living under the same roof can now share a Premium plan at a lower price than signing up individually. It's a sweet deal if you're tired of ads, love background play, but don't need a full-blown family plan. And while pricing details haven't been shared yet, it's clear this could be a tempting alternative—especially for those who ditched Premium after recent price hikes.
The news was first reported by Money Control, and though YouTube hasn't confirmed if or when this plan will roll out more broadly, it fits the platform's recent strategy of tweaking its subscription offerings. Just a couple of months ago, in March, YouTube introduced "Premium Lite" in countries like the U.S., Germany, and Australia—a stripped-down version that still blocks ads on most videos for $7.99 a month.
As YouTube continues to experiment, it's easy to see the appeal on both sides. Users get more budget-friendly options, and YouTube gets a shot at bringing back subscribers who've been on the fence. Right now, YouTube Music and Premium combined have over 125 million users worldwide, trial users included—and a two-person plan might help that number climb even higher.
Of course, since this is just a test run, there's no guarantee it'll hit your country anytime soon. But if it proves popular, don't be surprised if a duo deal lands in your YouTube settings sooner than later.
