We know, we know. Nobody is waking up and thinking about WhatsApp for their next big online foray into hosting a group event. Still, the idea isn't that far-fetched, at least if recent indications are accurate. WhatsApp has been working on a bunch of new features, such as default media upload quality settings, new composer for status updates, and last but not least, Group Events.

The Group Events is the star of this show, and it may be one of the bigger feature additions to WhatsApp. Group members can create events, RSVP, and get reminders with this new feature. Surprisingly, this hasn't already been a thing.

So why now?

WhatsApp is considered one of the best messenger apps by a lot of folks. Its popularity has been attributed to its no-fluff approach to instant messaging. Competitor apps, however, offer bells and whistles that do seem to attract users, so WhatsApp is throwing its hat into the ring, sort of like a virtual "keeping up with the Joneses."

Users can create events within communities and in regular groups for Group Events, as well as schedule voice calls and video calls, and a link will be generated so group members can join the festivities.

If you're the event creator, you can change the title, description, date, location, and other event info. Those attending the event will be notified of the changes, and everybody will see an "edited" text for the event.

Since groups can have multiple events by various members, it might get a little hectic trying to keep up, so it looks like WhatsApp may be adding a consolidated Events view section on the Group Info page, allowing users to tap the section for a dedicated Events view page, where all upcoming events will be listed chronologically.

Users who wish to attend an event will likely be reminded by whatever default notification is on their device, like the alarm or some other annoying noise of their choosing. It's all still up in the air until the new feature rolls out, along with the other goodies WhatsApp thinks we need.

If you're one of those who like the no-frills approach of WhatsApp, this might not be for you, but for now, WhatsApp is going to make it a little easier to invite everyone to the party.
